Lonely woman, one in a crowd Sees a man she's never seen before Reaches out, touches him Now she'll never be the same again He gives her new beginnings He lifts her fallen head up high again He helps her rise and run with him And now she never needs to be the way she was before Anymore I was lonely, broken in my shame Knowing that I had failed his love Then he reached out, he called my name Saying his love would lift me high again He gives me new beginnings He lifts my fallen head up high again He helps me rise and run with him And now I never need to be the way I was before.
2.
Our lives belong to you, again we lay them in your hands We offer you ourselves, our hopes, our fears, our dreams, and plans Help us be thankful for each day as walking in your way of love Always to sing and share and pray Following the One you gave. Oh make each house a home, a place where each may grow to be the person that you want, strong and kind and ready to see how to shoulder one another's loads, and feel each others pain and sorrow Making peace before the sun goes down Beginning new each morning again. In sickness and in health, we need your wholeness in our minds In weakness and in strength, your life we always need to find Don't let us wander far from you, if life becomes too hard or too easy Help us when doubt would pull apart, together to hold fast to you.
3.
Survival of the fit, selection of the strong and looking out for number one And into this world he brings another way Can we really believe it's a better way, Lord? Can we really believe in you? Can we trust what you say Hold on to your words And know that they are true? Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you Bless all those who curse you Pray for those who abuse you But if anyone hits you I'm watching Do what the master said For loving destroys your enemies And makes them friends instead When our hearts are cold, and our barriers are built to keep out his searching love He comes to us quietly as the sun A smouldering wick he will never quench A bruised reed he will not break He will not invade, but he will woo with his love And win by his gentleness
4.
I've always loved you so freely I've always given you time And everything that I have is yours to share So put these thoughts from your mind A family is meant for sharing This brother could be your friend An elder brother is what this boy needs So go and give him your hand Spread out the food, pour out the wine Play the music loudly, don't bother about the time Here is your brother, the one we thought was lost Returning to his family and to the one who loves him the most My love for both of you is without doubt From day to day it grows But he's the one who's been living without So why don't you and I let him know And I'm so glad that he's come home now And my joy would be complete If you'd give to him the same love I give you You do not need to compete
5.
For today we see all things fallen Far from God and from his ways And doing all within our power To keep from numbering our days And squeezing the fruits of fulfilment And draining the cup already dry And all creation is longing for the day when God makes all things well Black mother scooping water in a tin While her neighbour's living off a silver spoon And those whose boundaries are the city streets While their countrymen can journey to the moon And leaders are hungry for power Millions are hungry for the food they don't get And all creation is longing for the day when God makes all things well When the love dries up within our lives And the bitterness becomes our daily bread Help us Lord to come home to you And by your spirit to be led And to work with you to restore your world To make it the place that you want it to be For all creation is longing for the day when God makes all things well Yes all creation is longing for the day when God makes all things well
6.
Far from our world, from our sight Are prisons of darkness, of night Women are weeping behind their walls For sons and for daughters they bore May their tears be the seeds that grow into trees And the buds into blossoms that bring fruit of peace May their tears not be wasted, their cries not in vain May their labours be fruitful, bring birth from their pain Contempt thrown upon them each day Humiliated, scorned, as they pray For children whose faces they no longer remember And babies with whom they'll never play Father, their sufferings you bear And all of their pain, you share Send down your comforter, feed them on your food Mother their children, dear Lord
7.
Come and feast on the food, come and drink of the wine Come and sit down beside me, for the table is mine A promise for the future, forgiveness for the past Come and let me nourish you, I'm your meal and I'm your host Come to me The world lies in gloom, enshrouded in a tomb of empty sadness But just as the sun shall rise into the skies in the morning So is my love for you The night he was betrayed, he took the bread and gave it to his people He poured out his blood as the river of his love flowing down on our thirsty and longing lives And now we are his body and life being broken for the world today Together we must be his heart and his hands and his voice Reaching out and inviting them all to come to come and feast on his food to come and drink of his wine to come and sit down beside him his welcome there to find His promise for the future Forgiveness for the past To come and be nourished, he's the meal and he's the host Come and see, taste and see
8.
Someone's knocking on the door I see the census lady's here and the kids are home from school and they're getting in my hair And nature's calling someone and that someone's calling me and I smell something funny, I think I've burnt the tea I'm grabbing time to write my songs that's the way it has to be I live my life just grabbing on to you And your love grabs hold of me Now the telephone is ringing, "no I'm sorry he's not home, but can I take a message? Yes, I'm sure he'll be back soon" And now the baby's waking up, uh-oh I've got a hunch Although it's nearly time for tea she hasn't had her lunch Now I have to get up earlier to keep one step ahead But I must admit for privacy there's no place like our bed I'm knee deep in nappies but I'm head high in love And I don't know where I'd be without these blessings from above Now the day is over and they've all gone to sleep I sit down with my pen and I put up my feet I try to hum a melody but wait somethings wrong The house is far too quiet and my inspirations gone
9.
Who else have I in heaven but you Since I have you what on earth do I need My mind and my body may grow weak But you are my strength, you are all that I need This world seems to be going its own way Sadness and hunger and misery each day Your enemy seems to be messing up all of your plans This world thirsts for you with pain on its face We long to see your power but your enemy seems to be in your place Is everything alright? Is anything still in your hands? Well I don't have a great deal of confidence that we're getting any better, that our world has permanence 'Cause what it all comes down to is we love ourselves more than we love each other The very best we manage, the most we ever strive for falls so short of the most that you desire So Lord please come again, please make everything alright Is everything alright, is anything still in your hands?
10.
Stand up again, smile once more Lift up your hearts, he's done what he said he would do Wipe away your tears, don't worry about anything Jesus is here and you know You know that he cares He wasn't just a dream that we had He wasn't even playing a game And now I believe all the things that he said to you and to me I believe them all, because he came to me Turn and face that man, let him take your hand Let him take you to that hill, let him take you to that tree Look upon his hands and broken feet Look upon his wounded side Look upon his weeping face and know And know it was for you that he died Let him place his cross upon your shoulders Place his life within your life Place his thoughts within your mind And raise you up a race made new Go into the world to which he came Take his love to all mankind Tell the people, tell the nations Man can know his God again He wasn't just a dream that we had He wasn't even playing a game And now we can turn again our faces to our God We can turn again Because he came to us
11.
I love the Lord for he heard my voice He turned his ear to my cry I will call on him as long as I live Our God is gracious and kind And what shall we give to the Lord in return for his goodness to us? We will drink your cup of salvation oh God and offer you our lives and praise The Lord protects the helpless and poor He helps all those who are brought low Return to him as your resting place For the Lord has been good to you I believed in him even though I was crushed He delivered my soul from death My feet from failing, my eyes from tears I walk with him into life
12.
He gives me new beginnings He lifts my fallen head up high again He helps me rise and run with him And now I never need to be the way I was before Anymore

A NOTE FROM NATALIE (Dunedin, 2021)

Here’s where it all began.
‘New Beginnings’ was my first album of original songs.
Well, it really began when I was 5, soloing on stage at the Edendale Town Hall in Southland. I wrote my first song as a 10 year-old at Ponsonby School, Auckland. Dubious quality but I can still sing it!

Songs and song writing have always been a huge part of my life and in my amazing brother Phil (Yule), a recording engineer, I had a regular persuader saying ‘you must come to Auckland and let me record your songs. What if you get hit by a bus tomorrow and we lose them all?!’
Fear of that bus obviously won the day because I finally did it, leaving my husband Selwyn, at home in Mosgiel with four of our five kids and lots of helpers. Good friend and motivator (‘think big’) Malcolm Sproull, did the cover photography on our front door step. My home community helped me to get away. Gratitude still wells up in me thinking about it.

Behind it all was the growing conviction that gifts are to be shared. This was a way to share my songs beyond my own boundaries.

A new community helped me do it. I was joined by some overwhelmingly great musicians organised by Phil. I was overawed, starstruck, terrified at times and did everything I was told, all the time learning, learning, learning. We recorded over five nights at Mascot Studios.

Phil was the most patient, encouraging and calming engineer I could have hoped for. Bonnie Low produced and named the album. Annie Crummer dropped by and did some backing vocals, Derek Lind gifted some exquisite guitar work, Stephen Bell-Booth dominated on the piano and keys, Steve Garden drummed…. and there were many others. I did a wee bit of guitar, piano and all the vocals. I learnt new techniques and in-house lingo and tried not to display my serious case of ‘imposter syndrome’. My Mum looked after our toddler Ollie and kept everyone topped up with the very best sandwiches. I felt humbled by everyone’s contributions. I still love the album and sing the songs. It hasn’t dated (well, it mostly hasn't dated ;).

Thanks everyone for getting me on the road before the bus came.

A NOTE ABOUT PHIL YULE

Phil has a long and illustrious reputation as an award-winning producer and recording engineer. With experience in recording studios in New Zealand and overseas, he now operates from The Voice Box which he established in 1999 in Ponsonby, Auckland.
Well-known in radio and recording, it is said that Phil has more radio and recording awards than anyone else in New Zealand broadcasting. He has also received international accolades, including from Hollywood, New York, London and Sydney.
He has worked extensively with many ‘greats’ in NZ radio including Paul Holmes, Kevin Black, John Hawkesby, Barry Jenkin, Merv Smith and Pete Sinclair.
He is currently technical producer for Marcus Lush (Radio Live).
Phil has recorded many award-winning jingles, including the iconic ‘crunchie bar’ ad. Musically he has worked with many of NZ’s well-known names, including Herbs, Haley Westenra, the Patea Māori Club, Billy T. James, John Hanlon, Shona Laing, Fred Dagg, John Rowles, Headband, Waves, The Chills, The Verlaines, Sneaky Feelings, Derek Lind and Guy
Wishart.
And of course, Phil is the force, facilitator and enabler of four of my five albums. Thank you Phil, nothing that I have achieved could have happened without you! Blessed to be your sister.

FROM FRAN CAMMOCK (Wellington, 2020):

I encountered New Beginnings as an 18-year-old in 1988. This album spoke directly into my life in powerful ways. As a young woman I could not always know or express what I wanted. Natalie’s joyful, hope-filled music provided a clear beacon of light and helped me clarify my life aspirations.
The songs gave me a frame for faith, with scripturally-embedded images revealing God in insightful ways I could relate to.
For example,
1. God who longs to reach out, touch, heal and free us, giving us ‘New Beginnings’.
2. God who throws a party, pours the wine, forgets the time and celebrates the return of a beloved child.
3. God who is good to us, protecting and helping the poor and hopeless, walking with us into life.
4. God who ‘mothers the children’ of grief-stricken political prisoners.
5. God whom despite our fears for the degraded state of our world, is right here with us, loving us in our brokenness and working with us to make ‘All Things Well’.

New Beginnings has empowered, challenged, and uplifted me, I have claimed and clung to its hope. The lyrics are as relevant to me now as when I was 18.   Natalie's clear crystal voice is accompanied by a polished musical band, the sound is great, I cannot recommend this album highly enough.
